TEZPUR COLLEGE – A PROFILE

Tezpur College came in to existence in the year 1965 due to untiring efforts of late Dulal Chandra Bhattacharjee, a doyen of teaching and legal community of Assam. He was also the founder president of the college. Started as an evening college for the benefit of poor students and housed in Tezpur Academy, the college was later shifted to the present site which is flanked by the famous picturesque hillock of Agnigarh in 1968.

Late P. Prasad, a senior High Court Advocate, was the first honorary principal of this college. During the years 1967-1994, the college enjoyed guidance and perseverance of Late C.M. Medhi, who steered the college through its infancy and laid the foundation for its present preeminence and allround development. At present Dr. Charu Saharia Nath is the principal of this college, who has joined in 2004 as its regular principal with an aim to devote herself for the overall development of the college, keeping pace with the present academic scenario of the whole country maintaining its glory of the past with the goodwill and cooperation of one and all.

Though initially the college offered only Arts stream to the students but from the academic session 2007-08 Commerce stream at the undergraduate level had been started. Further to boost the academic requirement the college has started Commerce stream at the 10+2 level from the academic session2008-09. The BBA programme has been started from the 2009-2010 session.

Principal’s Speech

Tezpur College is a premier institution of learning and education located in the foot hills of Agnigarh in Tezpur. Established in 1965, it is situated in a large campus of 10 bighas of land.

The college initially had only Arts faculty, but from 2007, Commerce faculty was also started. The college also takes pride in having recently launched the BBA programme from the year 2009. The College is accredited by the NAAC and it offers a number of courses in the Higher Secondary and Undergraduate levels in different subjects. Other courses include self-financing courses in Computer Education, Art and Music and Gymnasium and UGC sponsored Career-oriented courses in Tourism and Travel Management, Functional English, Coaching for Entry in Services for the students belonging to SC, ST and OBC Categories. The College is funded by the UGC and the Govt. of Assam.

The College Academic community comprises of 40 full time faculty members engaged in teaching research and public service activities and non-teaching staff includes 13 members engaged in official work.

The vast faculty of the college is committed to improve the quality of learning environment. In fact, the commitment and caliber of the college faculty and the facilities specially the library and computer resources are the reasons in particular, that attracts students to join the college .Because of the personalized atmosphere of the college, the students from diverse backgrounds experience a sense of warmth and welcome on campus. The college also conducts inter college competitions, national workshops, seminars, etc. Students are nurtured fully and are taught to face, appreciate and tackle challenges in life.
